FC devices are usually servers or storage devices such as disk arrays. An FCF is a Layer 3 network switch that is compatible with the FC protocol and forwards FC traffic, but does not provide network. Fibre Channel is primarily used to connect computer data storage to servers in storage area networks (SAN) in commercial data centers. Fibre Channel networks form a switched fabric because the switches in a network operate in unison as one big switch.
